Abstrakt

This paper provides a theoretical overview of the concepts of lean and manufacturing ramp-up in an attempt to firstly, compare them and secondly, to outline the areas in which those seemingly dissimilar concepts can be combined towards a conceptual manufacturing framework. The context of low-volume manufacturing is given special attention since such an environment is especially challenging for both the introduction of lean and manufacturing ramp-up.
Simultaneously, low volume industry offers products that are often engineered or made to order, highly customized, and tends to be manufactured for downstream industrial producers. On the other hand, low volume production is an inherent characteristic of the ramp-up process, and that further justifies the focus of this paper.
Furthermore, there is only sparse evidence on the subject of applying the lean philosophy to manufacturing ramp-up and therefore, this study is an attempt to address this gap. This is achieved by providing a comparison of the two concepts and outlining the areas in which they can be combined for mutual benefit, as well as providing a theoretical/conceptual framework for applying lean philosophy to the manufacturing ramp-up process.
