Abstract
Deliverable 6.2.1 refers to the sub-task 6.2.1: “The impact of SUMPs on adult’s transport-related physical activity levels – a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis”. The review will be prepared in months 01-15, with following PEN partners involved: 040 (lead), 026, 049 and 076.
A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) is not a uniform set of policies. Each SUMP is specifically developed for a certain city, and consists of a diverse mix of policies that, together, aim to promote active transport within that city. Therefore, SUMPs from around the world can be very different, and effects of a SUMP on transport-related physical activity (PA) will vary greatly depending on the specific mixture of policies included, and on the local context. Therefore, in order to achieve sub-task 6.2.1, i.e. “to summarize the impact of SUMPs on adult’s transport-related physical activity levels”, the involved PEN partners have decided on the following approach. We will systematically review the existing scientific literature regarding the effectiveness of transport-related policies on a modal shift from car to active transport or to public transport, or from public transport to active transport (i.e. walking or cycling). If it is possible, depending on the heterogeneity of available studies, partners will conduct a meta-analysis for specific policies for which sufficient, high-quality evidence is available. These pooled effect estimates will provide robust evidence to identify effective measures that should be prioritized in future SUMPs.
This review will be conducted in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and will be registered in international prospective register of systematic reviews PROSPERO.
