Abstract

This exploratory study investigates Polish expatriate experts´ accounts of encounters with local personnel when building a Chinese subsidiary of a Western MNC between 2011 and 2015. Semi-structured, narrative interviews were conducted with Polish experts, drawing on qualitative methodology and thematic analysis. Their stories reveal prerequisites for intercultural communication,
language and culture-related communication problems with strategies to mitigate them, and factors that affect communication. The study offers important insights into the Polish-Chinese communication in a specific business context. It highlights research issues for further investigation and implications for practitioners with regard to preparation of top talents for expatriation.
