    Abstract

International business (IB) phenomena often involve complex relationships between factors at different levels. Multinational corporations (MNCs) are influenced both by different country and industry environments which may have independent as well as interactive effects on MNC performance. While hierarchical random coefficient models (RCM) are often used for the analysis of multilevel phenomena, IB issues often result in more complex nested structures. This paper illustrates how cross-nested multilevel modeling allowing for predictor variables and cross-level interactions at multiple (crossed) levels of analysis may yield novel insights to IB research. The results have implications for IB research in its pursuit of an integrative approach to understanding the multilevel determinants of firm internationalization and performance. The paper further illustrates the importance of adequately modeling crossed-nested structures in multilevel models.
