    Abstract

"Makit Ltd: A Price Above Rubies" describes the development of a social entrepreneurial venture started by three young business school graduates. It follows the start-up process from their first idea identification, via the process of business plan writing, fund raising, to eventual start-up, and the issues faced in the field. The case is intended for use in a class entitled 'Business Plan Writing for Social Enterprises' where it is used early in the course to introduce students to a real world business plan example. At this point it is worth noting that the business plan in the case is a near exact copy of what the Makit used during 2012 for fundraising. Students are asked to analyze the business plan and to identify both its strengths as well as its limitations in that process allowing students to probe the different uses of business plans and how these can be best addressed in a business plan. The case lends itself, furthermore, to the introduction of a number of other topics related to social entrepreneurship, such as, for example, how to organize a founder team, the ownership structures, and how to plan for the risk of one founder leaving the team. Moreover, the case allows discussing the differences in fundraising of start-up capital from private equity investors on the one hand and of grants from development agencies on the other hand
