    Abstract

This paper examines differences in value across different patent types. Two hypotheses are investigated: Patent types protecting results of cumulative knowledge formation are more valuable than other patents and increasing risk of imitation detracts comparatively more from patents appearing early in a process of knowledge accumulation. Applying a unique text-mining method based on semantic structures in patent text and IPC codes we identify 7 distinct patent types. With zero inflated negative binomial regressions we test and confirm our hypotheses using a dataset consisting of 1322 patents from 110 Scandinavian biotech firms.
