Abstract

The lack of research and documentation related to the benefits of a horizontal network as a decisive mechanism for competitive sustainability of small and medium-size supermarkets is notable. This phenomenon has received increasing attention in the last five years and studies have been predominantly of an exploratory nature. This paper explores an important discussion about horizontal cooperation of small and medium-sized supermarkets. It critically analyzes the formation of cooperation, identifying the potential benefits and challenges that influence sustainability. The paper further presents the results of empirical research that can give valuable insights to actors of the grocery industry who are trying to maintain their businesses. The methodology of the study is based on five stages that complement each other, including both quantitative and qualitative research. Findings can also be used by researchers to better understand the essence and advantages of cooperation between small and medium-sized supermarkets and the possible complications inherent in this type of partnering effort.
