Abstract

This article explores the significance of supply chain flexibility in an unpredictable world. The authors introduce the SC-Flexibility Drivers Matrix, a model that identifies nine key drivers of supply chain flexibility. They stress the importance of supply chain managers adapting to external conditions by developing flexibility within their supply chains. The article also discusses the relevance of supply chain flexibility in the face of global disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Examples of successful implementation of supply chain flexibility by companies like Amazon are provided, along with an examination of the different impacts and financial implications of supply chain disruptions based on product type. The article concludes by emphasizing the growing necessity of supply chain flexibility for organizations and the benefits it can bring in terms of competitive advantages and resilience. The SC-Flexibility Drivers Matrix is presented as a comprehensive tool to aid managers in understanding and implementing supply chain flexibility, with a focus on supply chain structure, information and knowledge management, and market strategy. The article also highlights the importance of fostering a flexibility-oriented culture within companies to drive competitive advantage in an uncertain business environment.
