Directions for Information Systems Research on Circular Economy

While there is broad acknowledgement that digital technology can support the circular economy, academic research on the topic remains scarce. Particularly the Information Systems (IS) discipline has fallen short in uncovering the true potential of digital technology to support systemic circular transitions. Considering the mounting environmental issues of society, the continuous rise of new regulation, and the advancements in technological innovation, the present time represent a unique opportunity for IS scholarship to engage in the conversation. Through a systematic, interdisciplinary literature review, this study provides a comprehensive overview of existing literature and identifies consensus areas, knowledge gaps, and directions for future research. To advance this domain, IS scholars and practitioners are invited to engage more vigorously in shaping future research and practice on the systemic transition towards a circular economy. Capitalising on prevailing research opportunities, the IS discipline can assume a critical role in disseminating how digital technology can impact this transition.
