Abstrakt

The article discusses the functions of the answer particle nein 'no' in monological use, when an author uses nein as an answer to a statement/question which he makes himself or leaves unexpressed. It is proposed that nein is part of monological use, albeit as part of an internal dialogue or a dialogue with a fictive reader. Nein is informationally redundant without reference to text from a communication partner and it serves a rhetoric-stylistic function to focus the polarity of a proposition and to turn reader expectations or other salient discourse content into questions under discussion.
