Beskrivelse
Persistent and Mobile Chemicals (PMC) pose a hazard to the environment and to water resources, mainly Urban wet weather
discharges (UWWD), including runoff water, stormwater from urban separated sewer systems, overflows from combined sewer
systems exceeding their capacity, an often-overlooked source and carrier of PMC to the water environment.
REMOVEs main goal is to establish new knowledge and to demonstrate the feasibility of innovative solutions, technologies and
systems to "remove" up to 90% of the mass of PMC in UWWD targeting 5 key groups: persistent and mobile micropollutants (metals,
pesticides, hydrocarbons, bisphenol, phthalates, alkyl phenol, Polybromodiphenylethers - PBDE), Pharmaceutical active compounds
(PhACs), Biocides, PolyChlorinated Biphenyl - PCB, and Per- and polyFluoroAlkyl Substances (PFAS). All technologies will be
demonstrated through 6 complementary pilots sites (watershed, road, roof : 3 scales) in an operational environment in 4 cities
(Toulouse Metropole - FR, Copenhagen - DK, Bruxelles Capitale - BE and Milan - IT) with different climate characteristics and
challenges.
By acting at prevention level before those PMCs reach the water bodies and ecosystems, the additional ambition is to protect human
health. REMOVE project will generate new insights and guidances regarding the fate and transformation of PMC in the urban water
environment and systemic strategy to remove them. It will improve risks assessment by evaluating and reducing risks from
ecotoxicity on water, soils, sediments and natural resources aquatic ecosystems and human health.
REMOVE has a deep focus on social inclusiveness and trust, through direct citizen sensibilisation and engagement on PMC stakes in
stormwater and indirectly in water resources used in drinking water.
The consortium is composed by 21 partners (public administrations, research centres, SMEs, large companies, European Water
Platform and Social, Business and Communication Experts) from 8 EU countries.
