The purpose of the conference and special issue is to uncover the relationship between regional inequalities and different aspects of political discontent in Europe. Specifically, the conference and special issue will address the following research questions from comparative and longitudinal perspectives: How do regional inequalities in Europe influence political behavior and attitude formation?
What can be done to address political discontent related to such inequalities? There is a pressing need for advancing our knowledge about the link between the subnational context, political preferences and the potential factors which can mitigate the feeling of living in places that do not matter in the European
context. From a normative perspective, it is key to enhance political trust and participation that will empower citizens, stimulate empathy and enhance the legitimacy of democratic decision-making in Europe (Arendt 1970).
