EUopSTART: Shaping AI for Resource Equity: A Doctoral Network on Fair Allocation for Citizens

Fair allocation of scarce resources, based on transparent, consistent, and unbiased principles, is
fundamental to democratic governance and essential for sustaining the legitimacy of market
systems. The Doctoral Network will recruit 12 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) and train them as PhD
students, in a cross disciplinary and intersectoral doctoral training research and education program,
to address the urgent need for citizen-centric fair allocation approaches.
The Network will provide the DCs with the knowledge and skills to tackle key challenges through six
interrelated scientific objectives
O1. Advance methodological innovations in fair allocation
O2. Apply and validate frameworks in key societal domains
O3. Bridge disciplinary fragmentation through integration
O4. Develop techniques that enable objective assessment of equity based on data rather than
subjective perceptions
O5. Train a new generation of researchers in fair allocation
O6. Promote societal and policy impact
